Wineberry Candy is an early to midseason daylily that opens its first flowers ahead of many others. Its fragrant 4¾-inch flowers are soft pinkish peach with a wine-purple eye notched at the midribs and a yellowish-green throat.
The lightly ruffled petals show fine purple veining and a diamond-dust sparkle, and nicely branched scapes carry the flowers in early summer.
What it looks like
Flowers about 4¾ inches across with recurved tepals giving a triangular form, soft pinkish peach petals with purple veining and a light ruffle, a wine-purple eye notched at the midribs, a yellowish-green throat and a diamond-dust sparkle. Each bloom lasts a day, but many buds open in turn on branched scapes rising to about 22 inches above a fountain of long, arching, strap-shaped medium green leaves. The foliage clump is about 13 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom peach flowers with wine eyes dot the compact clump.
Growing it with lavender
Its peach petals and wine-purple eye pair gracefully with lavender in full sun and well-drained soil.
Care
Grow in full sun to light part shade (at least six hours of sun for the best bloom) in average, well-drained soil; once established it handles heat, clay and dry spells. Hardy in zones 3 to 9. Snap off faded flowers for a tidy look, cut bare scapes to the base after bloom and divide crowded clumps every few years.
