Wineberry Delight is a substantial upright stonecrop with dark wine-purple leaves. Rose buds open to white flowers with salmon-pink centers that deepen to rose red as they age, so the heads read as light pink overall against the dark foliage.
It grows up to 2 feet tall and more than 2 feet wide, bringing strong color and contrast to the middle of a sunny border from spring through fall. Very drought tolerant; rabbits leave it alone.
What it looks like
Thick, fleshy, oval leaves 2 to 3 inches long in dark wine purple, set densely on sturdy upright stems. In late summer, domed heads 4 to 5 inches wide of tiny star-shaped flowers open from rose buds to white petals with salmon-pink centers, aging to rose red, giving a light pink overall look. The plant is an upright clump 18 to 24 inches tall and 26 to 30 inches wide. At peak it looks like a dark purple mound topped with pale pink domes.
Growing it with lavender
Upright sedum loves the same full sun and lean, well-drained soil as lavender, and its broad, fleshy leaves and late summer flower heads add contrast in texture and carry color after the lavender harvest.
Care
Plant in full sun in average to poor, well-drained soil; it is very drought tolerant once established and rots in wet, heavy ground. Hardy in zones 3-9; leave the stems standing for winter interest and cut them back in early spring as new growth appears. Avoid rich soil, which makes stems flop.
