About the Product

Yellow Brick Road covers its dark green leaves and red stems with fine yellow flowers from mid to late summer, a few weeks later than the common summer groundcover sedums. That timing helps bridge the gap between summer and fall bloomers.

It holds a neat, low habit without flopping open, spreading about 2 feet wide. It is a great choice for sunny slopes, rock gardens and dry edges, and it is very drought tolerant.

What it looks like

Small, fleshy, spoon-shaped leaves about 1 inch long in dark green with toothed tips, carried on reddish stems. From midsummer, flat clusters of fine, small, bright yellow star-shaped flowers cover the top of the plant. The plant forms a low, dense mat 6 to 8 inches tall and 22 to 24 inches wide. At peak it looks like a wide carpet of yellow over dark green and red.

Growing it with lavender

This low sedum thrives in the same hot, sunny, well-drained ground as lavender, making a tidy succulent carpet along the front edge of a lavender bed or between stepping stones.

Care

Plant in full sun in average to poor, well-drained soil; it is very drought tolerant and does not like wet feet. Hardy in zones 3-9; trim off faded flower stems after bloom if you want a neater mat, and divide or replant pieces anywhere you want it to fill in.

Spring through early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and tender. Pot into 4-inch pots and grow on 3–5 weeks in bright light, or plant out after frost. Keep evenly moist, harden off a week, and set the plug top level with the soil.

When to plant

Spring through early fall.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil surface.

Spacing

10–12 inches; mats spread over time.

Soil

Sandy, gravelly or rocky · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: Add grit or pea gravel to clay. Don't add rich compost; lean soil keeps mats tight.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light part shade).

Shade makes them stretch and lose leaf color.

Is it alive? What spring looks like
