About the Product

Zagreb is a well-loved threadleaf coreopsis whose flowers are a rich golden yellow, warmer and deeper than Moonbeam. It blooms steadily from early through late summer.

The plant forms a bushy yet airy clump of needle-fine foliage about 15 inches tall, compact enough for the front of a border or a container. It is long-lived, drought tolerant and easy to care for.

What it looks like

A bushy but airy clump about 15 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide, slowly widening by creeping roots, made of many upright stems. Foliage is very fine, needle-like and medium to dark green with a feathery texture. Daisy-like flowers about 1 to 1.5 inches across have eight bright golden-yellow petals with notched tips around a small darker gold center. At peak bloom the clump is thickly dotted with golden flowers across its top.

Growing it with lavender

It thrives in lavender's sun and lean, well-drained soil, and its golden flowers are a classic complement to lavender's purple through summer.

Care

Plant in full sun in average to lean, well-drained soil; it is drought tolerant once established and dislikes wet winter soil. Hardy in zones 4-9. Shear the plant back by about a third after the first big flush to tidy it and encourage more flowers.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring after hard frosts, or early fall at least 6 weeks before the ground freezes.

When it arrives

Your bare-root plant

Arrives as a tangle of thin, wiry roots with a small crown of dormant buds or old stem stubs; it may look like dead twigs. Soak roots 20–30 minutes, plant crown at soil level, water in. Keep evenly moist until growth starts.

Expect new growth in about 6 weeks after planting. Bare root ships March–May while dormant, with little or no top growth, and it can look lifeless until then. That’s normal. A late riser: fine, needle-like shoots usually appear mid-to-late spring, often after many other perennials. Don't dig it up in April thinking it's dead; scratch the crown and look for green buds.

You won’t be able to tell within 24 hours of arrival whether a dormant plant will grow.

When to plant

Spring after hard frosts, or early fall at least 6 weeks before the ground freezes.

How deep

Set the crown even with the soil surface, with the fine roots spread out below. Don't bury the crown or mound mulch against it.

Spacing

About 18–24 in apart; plants spread slowly by short rhizomes.

Soil

Sandy, rocky or average loam; tolerates clay if it drains · pH 5.5–8.0

Fix-it tip: Don't enrich it. In heavy clay, loosen the bed and mix in grit or plant on a slight mound so the crown never sits wet in winter.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part sun (a few hours of shade)).

More shade means fewer flowers and floppier stems.
