About The Babcock House

The Babcock House is a bed and breakfast in an 1884 house on Oakleigh Avenue in Appomattox. It spent several years as a boarding house before a 1996 renovation brought it up to date, and today it has six bedrooms and one suite furnished with period antiques, each with a private bath, TV, Wi-Fi and robes. Parking is free.

Mornings start with a full breakfast of fresh fruit, a chef's entrée and coffee, tea or cocoa, served every day. Dinner is only for room guests: a four-course supper Wednesday through Saturday at 6 to 7 p.m., planned week by week around guests' tastes and dietary needs. Recent menus have included fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese and bacon jam, bourbon-glazed salmon and white chocolate bread pudding, and the bar list leans on Virginia producers. Adding a dinner package when you book holds a table for your nights.

Well-behaved children are welcome with an adult, but pets are not allowed; the innkeepers keep a list of local kennels. A sidewalk drop-off spot at the front helps guests with mobility needs, and the inn's website keeps a page of Appomattox events for planning a stay.

Evergreen Lavender Farm, a family-owned farm with pick-your-own lavender in early summer and an annual lavender festival, is about 10 minutes away, so an early-summer stay can pair a morning in the lavender rows with a quiet dinner back at the inn.
