About Dickie Bros. Orchard

Dickie Bros. Orchard sits beside Little De Priest Mountain on the eastern edge of the Blue Ridge, near Crabtree Falls, on land the Dickie family has farmed since James Dickie acquired it in three tracts starting in 1752. Tom and Emilie Dickie Bruguiere bought back more than 500 acres of the original holdings over about forty years, and John and Shelby Bruguiere now run the farm, one of the oldest family-owned farms in the country.

The orchard grows 19 apple varieties plus eight kinds of peaches, nectarines and plums. The apple harvest stretches from PaulaRed in late July and Gala and Honeycrisp in mid-August through Stayman, Winesap and Fuji in mid-October and Pink Lady in early November. The farm also raises pumpkins, corn, sweet potatoes and Angus cattle. After heavy crop loss in 2026, pick-your-own is limited to Pink Lady apples on two weekends: October 31 and November 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and November 1 and 8 from noon to 3 p.m.

The farm store in Roseland sells apples by the bushel, cider, apple fritters, fruit turnovers, apple butter, jams, honey and peach ice cream, plus sweet potatoes, squash and pumpkins in fall. The family also runs 151 Farm Market on Rockfish Valley Highway in Afton, which sells the farm's products but has no orchard. Since 2023 a converted barn has hosted weddings and events.

Evergreen Lavender Farm in Appomattox, known for early-summer pick-your-own lavender, is a little over an hour south, so see the lavender in early summer and come back to the orchard once apples start in late July.
