About Frey Vineyards

Frey Vineyards is a family winery in Redwood Valley, in northern Mendocino County, where the Frey family has lived since the 1960s. They began making organic wine in 1980 and call themselves the first certified organic winery in the country; in 1996 they became the first U.S. winery certified Biodynamic by Demeter. Their wines are made with no added sulfites and are vegan, and the Biodynamic wines ferment with wild yeast from the grapes. Bottles include Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Petite Sirah and a late-harvest Zinfandel.

The tasting room is open to walk-ins every day from 11 am to 5 pm, later on Fridays. A tasting of six wines on tap was $10 per person when we checked in October 2026, waived if you buy wine. Groups of six or more should book at least 24 hours ahead, and tours can be arranged by calling the tasting room. Spring brings meadows of lupines and poppies, and the property also has a pollinator garden.

Picnics are encouraged, and the terrace looks out over vineyards, a pond and the mountains, with swallows, bluebirds, herons and barn owls living on the land. Well-behaved dogs are welcome. Friday evenings bring snacks and later hours, and the fall 2026 calendar included live music nights and a family-friendly Halloween dance. The rebuilt winery also hosts weddings, so the tasting room sometimes closes for private events.

The nearest lavender farm is Purple Hills Lavender Farm in Geyserville, about 50 minutes south on Highway 101, making an easy pairing for a day in the Mendocino and Sonoma wine country.
