About Handley Cellars

Handley Cellars is a small, family-owned winery at the northwest end of Anderson Valley in Mendocino County, bonded in 1982 and making about 9,000 cases a year. It sits on 59 acres of the old Guntly Ranch, where the early 1900s ranch house, barn and water tower have been restored. The estate vineyard covers 28.8 acres of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer and has been certified organic since 2005; a steep hillside Pinot Noir block called RSM was certified organic in 2017.

The tasting room is open every day, so a stop works in any month, and the setting changes with the season, from green spring vines to fall harvest. Tasting by reservation is recommended because space is limited, but walk-ins are welcome. For a closer look at the vines, a Vineyard Stroll and Tasting for up to four guests is offered by reservation. Inside, the tasting room shows Milla Handley's collection of Oaxacan, Balinese and African folk art.

There is no restaurant, but you can bring your own picnic to the picnic area, which is reserved first and then open first come, first served. The winery calls itself family and dog friendly; leashed, supervised dogs may join you in the courtyard and tasting room. Events in 2026 included a Harvest Dinner in the courtyard in late September and a watercolor paint-and-sip evening in early October. Groups larger than six need to call ahead.

The nearest lavender farm is Purple Hills Lavender Farm in Geyserville, about an hour and five minutes southeast by Highway 128 and Highway 101 through Cloverdale. A morning in the lavender rows and an afternoon tasting in Anderson Valley makes a long but scenic day.
