About Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery

Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery sits on the old Klondike Farm near Elkin, a 1920s retreat that John Hanes of Hanes Hosiery bought and that the Chatham family later turned into a guest house and a dairy known for its Golden Guernsey cattle. In 2003 the Rice and Douthit families planted a vineyard here, and the winery now makes its wines in the renovated 10,000-square-foot dairy barn, with tastings in a converted horse stable.

The 15-acre vineyard grows Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Sangiovese, Grenache, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. Wines come in two lines: the dry Grassy Creek label, including the Red Barn Blend first released in 2005, and the sweeter, fruitier Klondike Farm table wines. The tasting room is open Thursday through Monday, and reservations are not needed.

The property is part of the Elkin Valley trail network. You can walk along Grassy Creek, follow the Klondike Lake Trail to a painted mural on the old dam, or hike to Carter Falls, which makes the visit as much about the outdoors as the wine. The winery describes itself as kid and dog friendly, so families can come along while adults taste. Klondike Cabins, a sister property up the hill, rents cabins for an overnight stay, and the events page lists upcoming music and gatherings.

Second Wind Perennial Farms in Stony Point, about 50 minutes south by US-21 and I-77, is the nearest lavender farm; check its website for open days before you go.
