Honeyville is a third-generation family honey business whose factory store sits in the Animas Valley, about ten miles north of Durango on Highway 550. The family traces it to Vernon Culhane, known locally as the Falfa Honey Man, who started keeping bees as a hobby on his father's homestead on the Florida Mesa east of town. Danny, Sheree and Kevin Culhane run it today.
Inside the store you can find the queen in a live glass-walled beehive, watch products being bottled in the country kitchen, and taste wildflower honeys, jams, jellies and sauces. The Wild Chokecherry Jelly comes from Vernon's own recipe, made with chokecherries from his backyard trees and sweetened with honey. Shelves also hold whipped and raw honey, honeycomb, syrups, dessert and grilling sauces, and honey body care.
The store is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. the rest of the year. Because it sits right on the highway between Durango and Silverton, it makes a natural stop on a drive up the valley, and the glass hive gives children something to look for.
The nearest lavender farms are a long way off. Sage Creations Farm in Palisade is roughly 3.5 hours north by US 550 and US 50, so pair the two only on a western Colorado road trip, and check the farm's website for open days.
