Texas winery tasting room on McKinney's historic square, pouring 40-plus Texas wines with walk-in five-pour flights seven days a week.
Landon Winery's McKinney tasting room sits on the historic downtown square, among the brick storefronts and local shops. Founder Bob Landon, known around the state as Mr. Wine of Texas, started the winery in 2005, and it has grown to seven tasting rooms plus the sister winery Red Dirt Cellars in Grapevine. The wine is made at the company's Greenville facility, and most of the reds, including the Tempranillo, use fruit from the Texas High Plains.
The list runs to more than 40 Texas wines across dry reds, dry whites, sweet and specialty styles, along with craft beer and cocktails. A standard tasting is five pours, and an elevated tasting adds a charcuterie board. No reservation is needed for tastings; you walk in during open hours. On Wednesdays, bottles of the winery's wines are half off at every location.
The kitchen serves made-to-order charcuterie boards, flatbreads and shareable dip trays all day. The winery's Music Bingo nights are free and open to all ages, and soft drinks are on hand for those who are not drinking. Because the room is on the square, a visit lines up well with downtown McKinney's markets, arts festivals, Oktoberfest and the Home for the Holidays celebration. Groups can rent part of the room for a private event.
Lavender Ridge Farms in Gainesville, the nearest lavender farm, is about an hour northwest. It has a café and cut-your-own lavender when the bloom allows, so a summer day could start there and end on the square.
