About Les Agnels – Distillerie de Lavande & Plantes Aromatiques
Les Agnels is a family distillery on the Route de Buoux in the hills above Apt, in the Luberon. The Agnel family has lived here since the Middle Ages, and the distilling business dates to 1895; the fifth generation now runs it. They grow lavender and lavandin and distill them along with other aromatic plants.
They make a point of not being a museum: the exhibit on the family's history and the screening room, with a film of about ten minutes on lavender, are free. You can learn to tell lavender and lavandin apart by scent and see how distilling works. In July and August, one-hour guided tours cover growing methods, the stills and the botanical differences between the two plants. Tours in French run Monday to Friday at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., and an English tour runs at 3 p.m. The posted price is €8 per person, free under 7, and booking is required.
The producer shop sells the farm's essential oils, floral waters and cosmetics, along with regional foods and aromatherapy supplies. The family also runs aromatherapy workshops, group and school visits, and full days at the estate. From November through March only groups are received, by appointment.
Apt is the main market town of the Luberon, and the road north from Les Agnels leads up to Sault and its lavender plateau in under an hour.
