Loafers Bread Co. has baked for the Pittsburgh area for more than 20 years, and its Wexford shop sits in Wexford Plaza on Perry Highway, next to Whole Foods. The bakery builds its loaves on freshly milled flour from hard red spring wheat grown without chemicals on one family farm in Montana, and it describes all of its work as scratch baking.
Loafers rotates through more than 50 breads, with about eight on the shelves on any given day, from breakfast loaves like Cinnamon Raisin Walnut to savory ones like Pesto Parmesan. Monday through Saturday you can count on Cinnamon Swirl, Pennsylvania Dutch Streusel, Honey Whole Wheat, Honey White, Challah, English Muffin Bread and Struan. Biscotti come out of the oven every morning before the doors open, and two kinds of fruit-filled British-style scones, muffins, coconut macaroons, brownies and quarter-pound oatmeal cookies are made daily.
Beyond bread and sweets, the shop makes sandwiches, hand-rolled cinnamon rolls topped with pecans or a light icing, and its own granola, and it assembles gift packs. The Wexford store opens at 7 a.m. Monday through Saturday, early enough for a breakfast stop before a drive north. Pickup orders can be placed through their website, and the company also has shops in Cranberry Township, Fox Chapel and Bridgeville.
