About Otago Farmers Market

The Otago Farmers Market started in March 2003 and is one of the longest-running farmers markets in New Zealand. It sets up every Saturday in the northern car park of the Dunedin Railway Station, and it is strictly a food market: the producers come from around greater Otago and staff their own stalls, so you can ask the grower or maker directly. In peak season there are up to 65 vendors.

It runs every Saturday from 8am to 12:30pm, rain or shine. In more than 20 years the market has been called off only once for a civil emergency, aside from the pandemic lockdowns. What is on the tables follows the seasons, and the market's website has a seasonal eating guide if you want to know what to expect in a given month. A stall map is handed out each week at the site office by the front entrance.

Expect fresh fruit and vegetables, free-range eggs, sourdough, cheese and baking, with crepes, street food and coffee for breakfast on the spot. The market chef runs cooking demonstrations with samples using vendors' produce. Dogs are not allowed inside the market, though they can be tied at the front fence. Many stalls take cards, but cash is wise, and the nearest ATMs are on George Street about five minutes' walk away.

Lavender Row is about 25 minutes southwest on Outram-Mosgiel Road. Contact the farm first, as its shop hours are not published.
