About Saravilla Bed & Breakfast

Saravilla is a bed and breakfast in a three-story Dutch Colonial mansion on North State Street in Alma. The house was built in 1894 as an incentive for Sara Wright Lancashire to stay near her father after she married, and it is listed on the Michigan Historic Register. At about 11,000 square feet, it has served as a summer home, a private residence, a retirement home, a 50-bed hotel and, for more than 30 years, an inn. Original wallcoverings, light fixtures and leaded glass windows are still in place.

There are seven guest rooms, all with private baths. The Ammi Wright Suite has a king canopy bed, a sitting room and a two-person whirlpool, the Turret Room has a one-person whirlpool, and others offer a soaking tub, a claw-foot tub or room for up to four people. Guests can use a 1,200-square-foot ballroom, a billiard room, a library and parlor, a 24-hour guest kitchen and the wraparound porch and decks.

Breakfast is served on fine china in the turret dining room, with fresh fruit, pastries and several hot entrees. The inn is a short walk from Alma College and the town's original business district, with restaurants and antique shops. The innkeepers' own pets live on the main floor but stay out of guest rooms.

Sixteen Sprigs Lavender Farm is about 4 miles north on State Road, roughly a 10-minute drive. Its fields are open from May to late August, with U-pick and tours from mid-June to late July.
