About The Williamsburg Winery

The Williamsburg Winery began when Patrick Duffeler and his wife Peggy bought a run-down farm with several large barns near Williamsburg. They planted their first grapes around 1985 and released their first wine in 1988. Today the Wessex Hundred property has more than 50 acres of vineyards set among woods, fields and gardens, with an on-site tavern, a market called Provisions and Wedmore Place, a small hotel styled after a European country inn. The wines come in themed series such as Jefferson's Journey and the Lafayette Series, plus estate, reserve, sparkling and dessert bottles.

The tasting room in Susan Constant Hall is open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., with last call at 7, and pours flights of four 2-ounce wines. Booked tours range from the family-friendly Highlights Tour and tasting ($40 per guest, with non-alcoholic drinks for anyone under 21) to the Founder's Tour ($65), a seated Private Estate Tour with nine reserve wines paired with cheese ($80) and a Barrel Cellar Tour ($100). Those last three are for guests 21 and older.

The Tavern serves lunch every day, dinner Thursday through Saturday and brunch on Sunday, and the outdoor pavilion hosts live music. Outside alcohol isn't allowed on the farm, and the picnic areas close when the wine shop does. The winery closes on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. If you are staying in town, the winery also runs a wine bar in Merchants Square in Colonial Williamsburg.

Sweethaven Lavender, which offers reserved pick-your-own visits west of Williamsburg, is about 20 minutes away. Book a morning lavender slot in season, then come here for a tour and lunch at the Tavern.
