Bad Hair Day is a playful mangave whose narrow, flat, lime-green leaves arch out in every direction like a tousled head of hair. Each leaf is lightly spotted with blush red, with more color toward the tips.
The leaves are soft and flexible, so it is easy to handle, and it is one of the hardier mangaves. It looks great in decorative containers, especially planters shaped like faces.
What it looks like
Narrow, flat, flexible leaves about ¾ inch wide are lime green, lightly dotted with blush-red spots and flushed with red toward the tips. The leaves arch and splay outward in a loose, tousled, informal rosette 8 to 16 inches tall and 18 to 36 inches wide as it matures. Leaf tips are soft rather than sharp. The overall look is a lively, messy mop of lime-green leaves with rosy tips.
Growing it with lavender
Mangave loves the same full sun and sharp drainage as lavender, so a pot of it set among the lavender beds or on a sunny gravel patio makes a bold, spiky contrast for summer before it moves indoors.
Care
Plant in full sun, where the leaf color and spotting are strongest, in gritty, fast-draining soil or cactus mix, and water when the soil is dry. In the Great Lakes region, grow it as a summer container plant and bring it indoors to a bright window before frost. Hardy outdoors in zones 8 to 11.
