Banner of Love is a compact daylily that produces plenty of 5½-inch peachy-pink flowers, each with a soft red eye and matching ruffled edge. The effect is romantic but still bold enough to read from across the garden.
The flowers rise just above semi-evergreen foliage in midsummer, making it a fine choice for borders, beds and mixed plantings.
What it looks like
Rounded flowers about 5½ inches across with broad, ruffled petals in warm peachy pink, a soft rosy red eye band in the center and a thin matching red ruffled edge, around a yellow-green throat. Each bloom lasts a day, but many buds open in turn on branched scapes rising to about 24 inches above a fountain of long, arching, strap-shaped medium green leaves. The foliage clump is about 14 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom a generous number of peachy-pink flowers stand just above the leaves.
Growing it with lavender
Its peachy-pink blooms soften the purple of lavender nicely, and it is at home in the same sunny, well-drained bed.
Care
Grow in full sun to light part shade (at least six hours of sun for the best bloom) in average, well-drained soil; once established it handles heat, clay and dry spells. Hardy in zones 3 to 9. Snap off faded flowers for a tidy look, cut bare scapes to the base after bloom and divide crowded clumps every few years.
