About the Product

Bartzella is an Itoh peony, a cross between garden and tree peonies, with big, soft yellow blooms marked by a touch of rose-purple at the heart. The semi-double to double blooms reach 6 to 8 inches across and have a noticeably sweet fragrance.

A mature clump can carry dozens of flowers, spaced neatly over the top and sides of the plant, and some established plants produce 80 or more. The finely cut foliage resembles a tree peony and stays attractive through fall, forming a sturdy 3-foot clump that can stand in for a small shrub. The stems are strong enough that it rarely needs staking.

What it looks like

Large, semi-double to double flowers 6 to 8 inches across have broad, ruffled petals in soft buttery pastel yellow, with a small rose-purple to red flare at the base of the inner petals and a boss of golden stamens partly visible in the center. Blooms are distributed evenly across the crown and outer edges of the plant on sturdy stems. The foliage is deeply divided and lobed like a tree peony, medium to dark green and slightly glossy. The plant forms a dense, rounded, shrub-like clump about 30 to 36 inches tall and wide. At peak bloom dozens of yellow flowers cover the green dome.

Growing it with lavender

Bartzella likes the same sun and good drainage as lavender, and a clump makes a strong anchor at the end of a lavender row, its soft yellow flowers opening just before the lavender and its foliage giving a green backdrop all summer.

Care

Grow in full sun to light part shade in fertile, well-drained soil, with the crown set about 1.5 to 2 inches below the soil surface. Hardy in zones 4-9 and drought tolerant once established. Cut the stems back to a few inches in late fall, and avoid moving an established clump.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Best in early fall (September-October), when roots establish before winter. Spring planting also works.

When it arrives

Your bare-root plant

Expect a chunk of thick, tan, tuberous roots with several pink or red eyes (buds) at the top. Keep roots moist. Plant with eyes facing up, 1-2 in deep, firm the soil, and water well.

Expect new growth in 6 to 8 weeks after planting. Bare root ships March–May while dormant, with little or no top growth, and it can look lifeless until then. That’s normal. Red shoots appear in early to mid spring. Itohs have short woody stems that die back to the ground in winter. New plants may skip bloom or bloom lightly the first year or two; full bloom takes 3-5 years.

You won’t be able to tell within 24 hours of arrival whether a dormant plant will grow.

When to plant

Best in early fall (September-October), when roots establish before winter. Spring planting also works.

How deep

Set the pink/red buds (eyes) 1-2 in below the soil surface. Deeper than 2 in often means no flowers.

Spacing

3-5 ft apart for air circulation.

Soil

Deep, fertile loam · pH 6.5–7.5

Fix-it tip: Prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soil. Dig a wide hole and add compost. Avoid wet spots; poor drainage causes root rot.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light afternoon shade).

At least 6 hours of sun for best bloom.
