About the Product

Blue Emerald is a creeping phlox that blankets itself with soft lilac-blue flowers in spring, making a gentle wash of color. The plant forms a low, carpet-like mat no more than about 6 inches tall.

It is easy to grow and at home in rock gardens, on slopes and along the edges of borders and paths. Butterflies and bees visit the spring flowers, and the needle-like foliage stays green through the season.

What it looks like

Small, flat, five-petaled flowers about 3/4 inch across in soft lilac-blue, with slightly notched petal tips and a small darker eye, are packed so densely that they hide the foliage. The leaves are tiny, stiff and needle-like, bright green, on trailing stems that root as they spread. The plant forms a low, dense mat about 4 to 6 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide. At peak bloom it is a solid carpet of pale blue-violet.

Growing it with lavender

Creeping phlox likes the same sun and well-drained soil as lavender, and its soft blue carpet makes a neat spring edging along lavender beds, blooming weeks before the lavender does.

Care

Plant in full sun in average, well-drained soil; it tolerates dry spells and dislikes soggy ground. Hardy in zones 2-9. After bloom, shear the mat back by about a third to keep it dense and tidy.

How to grow Blue Emerald

Phlox · Phlox subulata

Two very different plants: garden phlox (P. paniculata) is a tall summer bloomer that wants sun, rich moist soil and good air flow; creeping phlox (P. subulata) is a spring groundcover for sun and lean, well-drained soil.

Hardy in zones 2a–9b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your bare-root plant

Garden phlox arrives as a dormant crown with fibrous roots and old stem stubs. Soak 1 hour, plant with the crown at soil level and roots spread, and water well. Shoots appear in a few weeks.

Expect new growth in about 6 weeks after planting. Bare root ships March–May while dormant, with little or no top growth, and it can look lifeless until then. That’s normal. Creeping phlox stays evergreen and flowers in early to mid-spring. Garden phlox emerges from the crown in mid-spring as reddish shoots and blooms in mid to late summer.

You won’t be able to tell within 24 hours of arrival whether a dormant plant will grow.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Plant at the same depth as in the plug or with the bare-root crown just at soil level.

Spacing

Garden phlox 18–24 inches for air flow; creeping phlox 12–18 inches for a mat.

Soil

Garden phlox: rich, moist loam. Creeping phlox: sandy or gravelly, well-drained soil. · pH 5.5–7.5

Fix-it tip: Add compost for garden phlox. For creeping phlox, add grit to heavy clay or plant on slopes and walls so it never stays wet.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light part shade).

Garden phlox in shade gets more mildew and fewer flowers; creeping phlox blooms best in full sun.
