About the Product

Blue Fortune is a long-proven, award-winning anise hyssop that carries soft blue-violet, bottlebrush flower spikes on strong, upright stems from midsummer into early fall. It adds color at a time when many perennials are winding down.

The foliage has a clear black licorice scent when crushed, and the leaves and flowers are edible with a light anise flavor. Growing two to three feet tall, it suits borders, pollinator gardens and cutting beds, and the spikes also dry well. It is easy to grow, tolerates drought and is usually ignored by deer.

What it looks like

Dense, cylindrical bottlebrush spikes 3 to 5 inches long packed with tiny tubular flowers in soft powder blue-violet with slightly darker calyxes. Spikes are held singly at the tips of stiff, square, upright stems. Leaves are medium green, heart-shaped to oval with toothed edges and a slightly paler underside, 2 to 3 inches long. The plant is an upright, vase-shaped clump 24 to 36 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom dozens of blue-violet spikes stand evenly over the foliage, often covered with bees.

Growing it with lavender

Blue Fortune shares lavender's love of full sun and well-drained soil, and its upright blue-violet spikes extend the look of a lavender planting well into late summer after lavender's main bloom.

Care

Grow in full sun and average to lean, well-drained soil; it handles dry spells once established. Hardy in USDA zones 4-9. Leave stems up over winter and cut them back in early spring; deadheading faded spikes keeps it tidy.

How to grow Blue Fortune

Hummingbird Mint / Anise Hyssop · Agastache

Give it full sun and lean, fast-draining soil. It handles heat and drought well but dies in soggy winter soil, so drainage matters more than anything else.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring after frost is best so roots establish before winter. Avoid late-fall planting in cold zones; hummingbird mints need a full season to root in.

When it arrives

Your bare-root plant

Bare-root Agastache is a woody crown with fibrous roots and maybe a few short stem stubs. Soak roots 20–30 minutes, then plant with the crown at soil level in fast-draining soil. Water once, then let it dry slightly between waterings.

Expect new growth in 6 to 8 weeks after planting. Bare root ships March–May while dormant, with little or no top growth, and it can look lifeless until then. That’s normal. One of the later perennials to wake up. Expect new shoots from the base in mid- to late spring, often after other perennials are well up. Old stems may look dead; look low at the crown for green shoots before giving up.

You won’t be able to tell within 24 hours of arrival whether a dormant plant will grow.

When to plant

Spring after frost is best so roots establish before winter. Avoid late-fall planting in cold zones; hummingbird mints need a full season to root in.

How deep

Set the crown exactly level with the soil surface, never buried. Plant on a slight mound in heavier soil.

Spacing

18–24" apart, depending on variety size.

Soil

Sandy, gravelly or loamy; avoid heavy, wet clay · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: In clay, plant on a mound or raised bed and mix in grit or fine gravel. Skip heavy compost and manure; rich, wet soil shortens its life. Don't mulch tight against the crown.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates a few hours of light shade, with fewer flowers).

6+ hours of direct sun keeps stems sturdy and blooming. In shade plants flop and bloom less.
