Blue Spear is a switch grass with a sturdy, columnar clump of blue-green leaves and a flower display unlike other switch grasses. In late summer its flower heads stay tight and fused just above the foliage, looking more like small sorghum heads than the usual airy clouds.
It grows about 4 feet tall and 2 to 2½ feet wide, handles wind, salt and drought, and stands up through winter. Cut the heads for fall arrangements or leave them for birds and winter interest.
What it looks like
Narrow, upright blue-green leaves about ½ inch wide form a sturdy, columnar clump 48 to 52 inches tall and 24 to 30 inches wide. In late summer, compact, dense flower panicles appear just above the foliage; rather than opening into an airy haze, they stay tightly clustered like small sorghum heads, green-tan maturing to warm tan. In fall the foliage takes on golden and tan tones. At peak the plant is a straight blue-green column topped with a band of dense tan seed heads.
Growing it with lavender
Blue Spear thrives in the same full sun as lavender, and its upright blue-green column makes a tidy vertical accent behind lavender, carrying interest into fall and winter.
Care
Plant in full sun in almost any soil, from sand to clay; it is drought tolerant once established but also handles wetter spots. Hardy in zones 4 to 9. Leave it standing for winter interest and bird cover, then cut it back to a few inches in early spring.
