Born to Run is a showy midsummer daylily with rich, rosy red flowers finished in a heavily ruffled, creamy yellow picotee edge. A narrow pale pink watermark sits above a lime green throat.
It reblooms later in the season and has evergreen foliage. Although listed at 28 inches, it often stays a bit shorter in the garden, around 20 to 22 inches, and the flowers carry a light fragrance.
What it looks like
Flowers about 5 inches across with broad petals in rich rosy red, finished with a heavily ruffled, creamy yellow picotee edge, a narrow pale pink watermark band and a lime green throat. Each bloom lasts a day, but many buds open in turn on branched scapes rising to about 28 inches above a fountain of long, arching, strap-shaped medium green leaves. The foliage clump is about 17 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom rosy red flowers with frilly cream edges stand above the leaves.
Growing it with lavender
Its rosy red, cream-edged flowers add warmth next to lavender in the same full sun and well-drained soil.
Care
Grow in full sun to light part shade (at least six hours of sun for the best bloom) in average, well-drained soil; once established it handles heat, clay and dry spells. Hardy in zones 3 to 9. Remove spent scapes promptly to encourage a later round of flowers, and divide crowded clumps every few years.
