About the Product

Bowles Golden is a tall, bright sedge with golden yellow leaves edged in a thin line of green. It grows 2 to 3 feet tall, larger than most sedges, and lights up shady or damp corners like a patch of sun.

This is a true moisture lover that thrives in wet soil and even in shallow standing water up to about 2 inches deep, making it ideal around ponds, streams and rain gardens. It looks especially good next to blue-leaved hostas, and deer usually pass it by.

What it looks like

Long, narrow, grass-like leaves about ¼ inch wide are bright golden yellow with a very thin green edge. They grow upright from the base and arch gracefully at the tips, forming a loose, fountain-shaped clump 2 to 3 feet tall and wide. Small, dark brown flower spikes appear briefly in spring among the leaves. Through summer the plant is a glowing, arching mound of gold, most vivid in bright shade near water.

Growing it with lavender

Bowles Golden needs constantly wet soil and part shade, so plant it beside a pond, in a rain garden or in a damp, shady bed far from the dry lavender rows.

Care

Plant in part shade in fertile soil that stays constantly moist or wet; it can grow in up to about 2 inches of standing water. Hardy in zones 5 to 8. Comb or cut out old leaves in early spring.

How to grow Bowles Golden

Sedge · Carex elata

Sedges are grassy clumps for part shade and moist soil. Japanese types (C. oshimensis, C. morrowii) are evergreen, the native woodland type (C. laxiculmis) handles dry shade, and Bowles' Golden (C. elata) loves wet soil.

Hardy in zones 5a–8b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant 72-cell plugs directly in spring or fall, or pot up into 4-inch pots to grow on. Keep moist and out of hot sun until new growth shows.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Plant at the same depth as in the plug, with the base of the leaves at soil level.

Spacing

12–18 inches apart for most; up to 24 inches for Bowles' Golden.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Add compost to hold moisture. C. elata will grow in boggy soil or pond edges; others need moisture but not standing water.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; morning sun).

Gold-leaved types like Bowles' Golden color best with some sun if kept wet; hot afternoon sun scorches Japanese sedges.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Japanese sedges stay evergreen and may look tattered after winter; new blades push up in spring. C. elata dies back and re-sprouts in mid-spring.
