Caradonna is known for its very upright, narrow habit and dark purple stems that make its bright violet-blue flowers stand out. It is a long-time favorite for sunny borders and one of the best salvias for cutting.
The leaves give off a pleasant herbal scent when brushed or crushed. Shear it after the first bloom and it will usually send up more spikes later in summer. Bees and butterflies visit it steadily.
What it looks like
Slender, stiffly upright flower spikes 8 to 12 inches long, lined with small two-lipped florets in bright violet-blue, carried on very dark, almost black-purple stems. The spikes stand straight up like candles, closely packed above the leaves. Leaves are lance-shaped, 2 to 3 inches long, mid to deep green and slightly crinkled, forming a low base. The plant is a narrow, rigidly upright clump 24 to 30 inches tall and about 15 inches wide. At peak it looks like a tight bundle of violet-blue rods on dark stems.
Growing it with lavender
Salvia wants the same full sun and lean, well-drained soil as lavender, and its upright spikes echo lavender's form while filling the gap before and after the main lavender bloom.
Care
Plant in full sun in average, well-drained soil; it is drought tolerant once established. Hardy in zones 3-8; shear the plant back by about a third after the first flush fades to encourage fresh growth and another round of flowers.
