About the Product

Catching Fire has rounded lime green leaves marked at the center with sharply defined, flame-shaped cherry red patterns that flare outward. Through summer the red deepens to mahogany, so the leaves keep a strong two-tone look.

It forms a very dense, polished mound 8 to 10 inches tall and 16 to 20 inches wide, with cream flowers in early summer. Its villosa parentage adds vigor and heat tolerance, and the foliage stays evergreen in most climates. Filtered sun or afternoon shade gives the best color.

What it looks like

A very dense, low mound 8 to 10 inches tall and 16 to 20 inches wide of rounded, lightly lobed leaves in vivid lime green. Each leaf has a bold cherry red flame-shaped marking at its center that spreads outward along the veins, turning mahogany by midsummer. Stems 16 to 20 inches tall carry slim spikes of tiny cream flowers in early summer. At peak the plant is a tidy lime and red mound with a light cream haze above.

Growing it with lavender

Foamy bells want shade and steady moisture, so give this one a shaded bed away from the lavender, where its lime and red leaves pair with ferns and hostas.

Care

Grows in full sun to full shade, but filtered sun or afternoon shade gives the best color. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil with even moisture; hardy in zones 4-9. Trim winter-worn leaves in early spring.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away and keep it in bright shade, never hot sun. Plant within a few days or move into 3–4" pots. Set each plug so its top is level with the soil, and keep it evenly moist for the first month.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil; never bury it.

Spacing

12–18" apart.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Add compost to clay or sand. Avoid low, wet spots; crowns rot from overwatering.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; more sun in cool, northern gardens).

Darker-leaved types handle more sun once established. Hot afternoon sun scorches leaves.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Often semi-evergreen; old leaves may look ragged in spring. Fresh leaves appear from the crown in early to mid-spring.

Care details are written for the whole foamy bells group; a few are our best general guidance rather than cultivar-specific testing.
