About the Product

Daisy May® is a compact shasta daisy that forms a solid dome of bloom. Its 3-inch pure white single flowers with gold button centers cover the plant from early summer into late summer, and deadheading keeps it going even longer.

In the Midwest it typically grows about 20 to 24 inches tall and wide. It is easy to grow and looks great massed along a sunny border, in containers, or cut for the vase.

What it looks like

Single, 3-inch daisy flowers with pure white petals around a golden yellow button center, packed so densely that they form a solid dome over the plant. Flowers are held on short, sturdy stems above glossy, dark green, lance-shaped, toothed leaves. The plant forms a compact, rounded mound about 20 to 24 inches tall and wide. At peak the foliage is almost hidden beneath a dome of white daisies.

Growing it with lavender

Shasta daisies share lavender's love of full sun and well-drained soil, and their crisp white flowers with gold centers make a classic cottage-garden partner for purple lavender in early summer.

Care

Plant in full sun in average, well-drained soil; water during dry spells but avoid soggy ground, especially in winter. Hardy in zones 5-9. Deadhead spent flowers to keep new buds coming, and divide clumps every few years in spring to keep them vigorous.

Hardy in zones 5a–9b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to grow on, or plant into amended soil once rooted.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown at soil level; don't bury the leafy rosette.

Spacing

12-24 in apart depending on variety.

Soil

Fertile, well-drained loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into sandy or clay soil. Wet winter soil is the top killer, so raise beds in heavy clay.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light part shade).

In hot climates, a little afternoon shade extends bloom.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Keeps a low rosette of dark green leaves through much of winter. New growth starts in early spring; flower stems rise in late spring to early summer.
