About the Product

Godzilla is a giant among painted ferns, forming a huge, arching clump of silvery fronds with green highlights on dark purple stems. It reaches about 3 feet tall and can spread 4 to 6 feet wide over time.

It spreads slowly where the soil is moist and loamy, making it a low-maintenance filler for large shady borders. It combines well with big hostas and other bold shade plants.

What it looks like

Very large, arching fronds up to about 3 feet long are cut into many leaflets that are silvery gray with green shading along the centers. Stems and midribs are dark purple, showing clearly through the silver. The fronds arch outward to form a broad, mounded clump about 36 inches tall and 4 to 6 feet wide. In midsummer the plant is a full, cascading mass of silver and green, much larger than a typical painted fern.

Growing it with lavender

Godzilla needs moist shade, so plant it in a large woodland bed or under trees with hostas rather than with lavender in the sun.

Care

Grow in part to full shade in moist, loamy, humus-rich soil and water during dry spells. Hardy in zones 3 to 8. Give it plenty of room and cut away old fronds in early spring.

Hardy in zones 3a–8b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away and keep it in bright shade, never hot sun. Plant within a few days or move into 3–4" pots. Set each plug so its top is level with the soil, and keep it evenly moist for the first month.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil; don't bury the center where new fronds (fiddleheads) form.

Spacing

18–24" apart; larger lady ferns and giant painted types up to 30".

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 5.0–7.0

Fix-it tip: Add compost or leaf mold and mulch with shredded leaves. Lady ferns (A. filix-femina) want more moisture than Japanese painted ferns (A. niponicum).

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; painted ferns like some morning sun).

Japanese painted ferns color best with gentle morning light. Most lady ferns need shade; afternoon sun causes scorch and wilting.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Fronds unfurl in mid- to late spring, after many perennials; painted ferns can be especially late. Look for small fiddleheads at the crown before you worry.
