How to grow Lemon Thyme Plants & Plugs

Creeping Thyme · Thymus × citriodorus

Creeping thyme needs full sun and sharp drainage on the dry side. It forms a low, fragrant mat; wet soil, shade and fertilizer are what make it fail.

Hardy in zones 5a–8b

Spring after hard frost or early fall.

When it arrives

Your 3-inch plug

It arrives actively growing. Water it the day it comes, let it rest in bright shade for 2–3 days, then harden it off for about a week before planting. Set the top of the root ball level with the soil — never deeper.

When it arrives

Your potted plant

It arrives growing in its pot. Water on arrival and let it settle in light shade for 2–3 days. Loosen any circling roots and plant with the top of the root ball level with the soil.

When to plant

Spring after hard frost or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown at soil level with roots spread out; keep stems on top of the soil, not buried.

Spacing

About 8–12 in apart for a mat.

Soil

Sandy, gravelly or rocky; lean · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: Add grit or pea gravel to heavy soil and avoid compost-rich beds. Gravel mulch keeps foliage dry. Avoid spots on irrigation systems.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates very light shade).

In shade the mat thins out and blooms poorly.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Semi-evergreen: the mat may look brown or gray after winter and greens up in mid-spring. Scratch a stem; green inside means it's alive.
