Peachie Keen covers itself in apricot peach flowers set in purplish pink calyxes, held just above the foliage for a neat, balanced look. Because the calyxes stay colorful, the plant keeps looking like it is in bloom long after the flowers finish.
It grows into a dense, ball-shaped clump about two feet tall and wider than tall, more refined than older hummingbird mints. It suits rock gardens, sunny borders and dry containers, and the aromatic leaves and flowers draw hummingbirds, butterflies and bees. Deer rarely bother it.
What it looks like
Dense spikes 3 to 4 inches long of small tubular flowers in soft apricot peach, each set in a purplish pink calyx, giving a peach-and-pink two-tone look. The spikes sit evenly just above the foliage across the top of the plant. Leaves are bright green, small, oval and toothed, aromatic. The plant is a dense, compact, ball-shaped clump 20 to 24 inches tall and 26 to 32 inches wide. At peak bloom it forms a tidy dome of peach and pink spikes.
Growing it with lavender
Peachie Keen grows in the same hot, dry, well-drained spots as lavender, and its apricot and pink dome makes a soft, warm companion to lavender while blooming long after lavender's first flush.
Care
Give it full sun and loose, well-drained soil; it tolerates dry spells once established and dislikes soggy winter soil. Hardy in USDA zones 5-9. Leave the stems standing over winter and cut back in spring once new growth appears, since this helps the crowns survive cold, wet weather.
