Pineapple Express forms a tight, spiky rosette that looks like the top of a pineapple. Its long, slender, dark green leaves are marked with bold burgundy spots and have a waxy coating that gives a minty green finish.
Tiny spines line the edges, and each leaf ends in a sharp cinnamon spine. It grows about 9 to 21 inches tall and looks especially fun in a yellow or tan pot.
What it looks like
Long, slender leaves about 1 inch wide are dark green with a waxy, minty green sheen and pronounced burgundy spots that intensify in full sun. The leaves are packed tightly and point upward and outward, forming a dense, spiky rosette 9 to 21 inches tall and 16 to 25 inches wide as it matures. Tiny teeth line the margins and each leaf ends in a very sharp cinnamon-brown spine. The rosette resembles the leafy crown of a pineapple.
Growing it with lavender
Mangave loves the same full sun and sharp drainage as lavender, so a pot of it set among the lavender beds or on a sunny gravel patio makes a bold, spiky contrast for summer before it moves indoors.
Care
Plant in full sun, where the leaf color and spotting are strongest, in gritty, fast-draining soil or cactus mix, and water when the soil is dry. In the Great Lakes region, grow it as a summer container plant and bring it indoors to a bright window before frost. Hardy outdoors in zones 8 to 10.
