Pineapple Express Mangave: A Spotted Spiky Crown for Patio Pots Save

Pineapple Express mangave forms a tight, spiky rosette that looks a lot like the leafy top of a pineapple. Its long, slender leaves, about an inch wide, are dark green with a waxy, minty green sheen and bold burgundy spots that intensify in full sun. Tiny teeth line the edges, and each leaf ends in a very sharp cinnamon-brown spine.

It grows quickly into a rosette 9 to 21 inches tall and 16 to 25 inches wide, and it earned an RHS Award of Garden Merit in 2024.

A playful accent among the lavender

Mangave loves the same full sun and sharp drainage as lavender, so a pot of Pineapple Express fits right into a sunny lavender patio or gravel garden. Where lavender is soft, gray and rounded, this one is dark, spotted and spiky, so the contrast is bold and a little bit fun. It looks especially good in a yellow or tan pot, which picks up the warm spines and makes the burgundy spots pop.

Try a cluster of containers: potted lavender, a pineapple-top mangave and a trailing succulent. Sketch the arrangement in the Companion Plant Planner.

Container care

  • Mix: gritty, fast-draining soil or cactus mix in a pot with a drainage hole.
  • Sun: full sun gives the strongest leaf color and spotting.
  • Hardening off: move it outdoors gradually in spring so the leaves do not sunburn.
  • Water: when the soil is dry, then let it drain completely.
  • Offsets: it grows quickly and produces offsets you can pot up separately.

Bringing it in for winter

Pineapple Express is not winter hardy in Michigan. Before nights drop below about 40°F, move it to a bright window or greenhouse and water sparingly until spring. Use the Frost Date Estimator to time the move in and out.

Handle with gloves

Those tip spines are very sharp, and as with agave, the sap can irritate skin. Wear gloves when repotting, and place the pot where people will not brush past it at shin height. It is grown as an ornamental, not for eating.

Frequently asked questions

How is it different from Permanent Wave mangave?

Pineapple Express is smaller and spikier, with slender spotted leaves. Permanent Wave has broad, silver, paddle-shaped leaves and grows much wider.

Does it ever bloom?

Rarely. When it does, the nectar-rich flowers attract hummingbirds.
