About the Product

Pink Pearls is a bearded penstemon with medium pink tubular flowers that open in late spring and continue into early summer. The plant is dense and full, with strong stems holding the blooms upright.

Its lance-shaped, dark blue-green leaves stay tidy all season. Coming from dry, rocky hillsides in the Southwest, it wants sun and good drainage, tolerates drought, heat and humidity, and is very cold hardy. Hummingbirds and bees visit the flowers.

What it looks like

Slender, upright stems carry many narrow, tubular flowers about an inch long in medium rosy pink, slightly paler inside the flared mouth, held along the upper half of the stems. Leaves are lance-shaped, smooth and dark blue-green, forming a dense basal clump. The plant forms a full, upright clump about 16 to 20 inches tall and 20 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom numerous pink spikes rise evenly from the blue-green foliage.

Growing it with lavender

This penstemon shares lavender's need for full sun and sharp drainage, and its pink spikes bloom alongside the first lavender flowers for a matched pollinator planting.

Care

Plant in full sun in well-drained soil; it tolerates drought once established and does poorly in wet, heavy ground, especially over winter. Hardy in zones 4-8. Cut flower stalks down to the leafy base after bloom to tidy the plant.

How to grow Pink Pearls

Penstemon · Penstemon barbatus

Penstemon needs full sun and very well-drained soil. Poor drainage is the main reason it fails; many types are short-lived, but in lean, gritty soil they bloom reliably.

Hardy in zones 4a–8b

Spring after frost, or early fall at least 6 weeks before freeze.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant plugs after frost in full sun, or pot up in gritty mix. Water lightly and let soil dry a bit between waterings; overwatering is the biggest risk for young penstemon.

When to plant

Spring after frost, or early fall at least 6 weeks before freeze.

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level. Burying the crown or piling mulch against it invites rot.

Spacing

About 12–18 in apart, more for large types.

Soil

Sandy, gravelly or loose loam; not compacted · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: Loosen compacted soil and add grit or plant in raised beds. Skip rich compost. Gravel mulch helps keep crowns dry. Hybrid types are more forgiving of heavier soil than western species like P. barbatus.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part sun).

More shade means fewer flowers and leggy stems.

New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Many types keep a low rosette of leaves through winter, often reddish or purple. New growth starts early to mid spring.
