About the Product

Red Flame is a boldly colored switch grass with native roots. Its leaves emerge blue-green and turn almost entirely wine red by the end of summer, with deeper, more saturated red than older red switch grasses.

It grows vigorously to 3 to 3½ feet tall and about 2 feet wide, holding up well to drought and salt. Use it for color, texture and movement in borders, containers and mass plantings.

What it looks like

Narrow leaves about ½ inch wide start blue-green in spring and deepen to rich wine red from the tips downward, becoming almost fully red by late summer. They form an upright clump 36 to 42 inches tall and about 24 inches wide. In late summer, airy reddish flower panicles rise above the foliage. At peak the plant is a fiery column of deep red blades with a light reddish haze on top.

Growing it with lavender

Red Flame loves full sun like lavender, and its deep red blades give a strong color contrast behind lavender's silvery foliage.

Care

Plant in full sun in almost any soil, from sand to clay; it is drought tolerant once established but also handles wetter spots. Hardy in zones 4 to 9. Leave it standing for winter interest and bird cover, then cut it back to a few inches in early spring.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring to early summer, once soil warms. Warm-season grasses root best in warm soil; avoid late-fall planting in cold zones.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away, set it in bright light out of harsh wind, and plant within a few days. If you wait, bump them into 3–4" pots. Harden off for a week before planting out, and keep the root ball moist the first 3–4 weeks.

When to plant

Spring to early summer, once soil warms. Warm-season grasses root best in warm soil; avoid late-fall planting in cold zones.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil; don't bury the base of the stems.

Spacing

24–36" apart, by variety; compact types closer.

Soil

Adaptable: sand, loam or clay · pH 5.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: No amending needed in most soils. Don't add compost or fertilizer to rich soil; extra fertility makes tall types flop.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light shade, with floppier stems).

6+ hours of sun keeps clumps upright and brings out red and blue leaf color. In shade, clumps open and lean.

New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

A warm-season grass: it wakes up late, often not showing new green blades until mid- to late spring, weeks after cool-season grasses. Don't dig it out—look for green at the base.
