Sassy Summer Sangria is one of the tallest in its group, with dark wine red flower heads, each floret marked with a small white eye. The rich color sits over silvery green, finely cut foliage for a striking contrast.
It grows up to three feet tall in a rounded, upright shape and blooms from early through late summer. Plant it in the middle or back of a sunny border, in a prairie garden or in a cutting bed. It shrugs off drought, salt and poor soil, and pollinators visit it constantly.
What it looks like
Wide, flat clusters 3 to 5 inches across of tiny florets in deep wine red to dark raspberry red, each with a small white eye, giving a slightly speckled texture. Clusters are carried on tall, stiff stems in a rounded dome over the plant. Foliage is silvery green, feathery and finely divided. The plant is upright and rounded, 30 to 36 inches tall and 36 to 42 inches wide. At peak bloom it is a broad dome of dark red plates above pale silvery leaves.
Growing it with lavender
Sassy Summer Sangria enjoys the same sunny, lean, well-drained conditions as lavender, and its deep red flower heads and silvery foliage make a rich contrast behind lower lavender plants.
Care
Plant in full sun and lean to average, well-drained soil; water regularly the first season, then only during long dry spells. Hardy in USDA zones 3-8. Shear the stems back by about half once the first flush fades to encourage a second round of flowers and keep the clump tidy.
