South Seas has distinctively colored 5-inch flowers in coral-tangerine with a reddish-coral band and yellow throat. The smooth, rounded petals are edged with graceful ruffles.
The fragrant blooms open in late afternoon and stay open into the next day. Multiple branching with 30 to 35 buds per scape and some rebloom give a long season, and it is a vigorous, award-winning grower.
What it looks like
Flowers about 5 inches across with smooth, rounded, ruffle-edged tepals in coral-tangerine, a reddish-coral band around the center and a yellow throat. Each bloom lasts a day, but many buds open in turn on branched scapes rising to about 30 inches above a fountain of long, arching, strap-shaped medium green leaves. The foliage clump is about 18 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom many coral-tangerine flowers are open along the multi-branched scapes.
Growing it with lavender
Its coral-tangerine flowers contrast warmly with lavender in the same sunny, well-drained soil.
Care
Grow in full sun to light part shade (at least six hours of sun for the best bloom) in average, well-drained soil; once established it handles heat, clay and dry spells. Hardy in zones 3 to 9. Remove spent scapes promptly to encourage a later round of flowers, and divide crowded clumps every few years.
