About the Product

Twinkle Toes covers its low, mounded clump with dainty light periwinkle-blue flowers in spring, picking up just as hellebores are winding down. The flowers are small but plentiful and have a clear, bright color.

After bloom, dark green leaves with a light sprinkling of silver keep the plant looking neat all season. It is compact, so it fits well at the front of a shade bed, among hostas, ferns and brunneras, or in a shaded container. Deer and rabbits rarely bother it.

What it looks like

Tiny, funnel-shaped flowers under half an inch long in a light periwinkle blue with a hint of violet, carried in small nodding clusters that cover the top of the plant. Flower stems are short and hairy, rising just above the foliage. Leaves are narrow and lance-shaped, 5 to 8 inches long, dark green with a light sprinkling of small silver spots. The plant forms a low, tidy mound 12 to 14 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide. At peak bloom it looks like a small dark green cushion dotted with a haze of periwinkle blue.

Growing it with lavender

Lungwort needs shade and soil that stays moist, so plant it away from the lavender in a shaded bed under trees, along a north wall, or beside hostas and ferns.

Care

Plant in part to full shade in humus-rich soil that stays evenly moist; it tolerates dry spells poorly in sun. Hardy in zones 3-9; after flowering, cut off the old flower stems so fresh leaves fill in, and divide crowded clumps in early fall if needed.
