Bouquet Perfect™ Watercolour Blue Primrose: Sky Blue in April Save

Bouquet Perfect™ Watercolour Blue primrose earns its name. Each flower is soft sky blue at the edges and deepens to a darker blue toward the center, around a small yellow eye, so the petals look like they were painted with a wet brush. The flowers are among the largest in the series and crowd into a neat dome.

True blue is rare in early spring, and rarer still in shade. Watercolour Blue fills that gap, but it is a shade and moisture lover, so it goes in a different part of the garden from your lavender.

Designing with soft blue

Pale blue reads as calm and cool, and it shows up well in shade without shouting. A few ideas:

  • A blue and white shade edge: alternate Watercolour Blue with a white or pale primrose along a shaded path.
  • With fresh green: plant it where hosta shoots and fern fiddleheads are coming up, so the blue sits against new spring green.
  • By the door: a pot of three on a shaded step gives you color to come home to in April.

In a property planned around lavender, a blue spring shade bed is a nice prelude to the purple summer beds. The Companion Plant Planner lets you sketch both and see how the seasons line up.

Care through the year

  • While blooming: keep the soil evenly moist and remove faded flowers. Sterile flowers keep the display going for weeks.
  • Summer: water through July and August. Heat can make the leaves wilt or go semi-dormant.
  • Fall: plant new primroses by early fall. Add a light leaf mulch in exposed spots to reduce frost heaving.
  • Winter: well-drained but moist soil is the goal; soggy ground causes crown rot.
  • Every few years: divide crowded clumps after bloom and replant the divisions to extend your blue edge.

Ordering format

Watercolour Blue is offered as a 72-cell plug tray, enough for a long run of edging or a set of spring containers. See the product page for current availability.

Frequently asked questions

Does the color change as the flowers age?

The defining look is the gradient from sky blue edges to a deeper blue center. Light and temperature can shift how strong the blue looks from day to day.

Will slugs bother it?

Slugs are one of the usual primrose pests in damp shade, along with aphids and spider mites. Check the undersides of leaves in spring.
