About Al's Steak House
Al's Steak House has served dinner on Joliet's west side since 1959, which makes it one of the city's longest-running upscale restaurants. The chefs cut steaks and chops in house every day and cook them over a charcoal grill, and fresh fish arrives daily. The house specialty is a steak pan-fried Grecian style and served with Al's own double-baked potato. Look for the old gates from Joliet Citizens Brewery, a city landmark, worked into the decor.
The menu runs from filet mignon, ribeye and a 28-ounce porterhouse to Athenian chicken, a Greek village salad, shrimp de Jonghe, oysters Rockefeller and king crab legs. Prime rib in Al's cut is a Friday and Saturday dinner, made in limited numbers. Sides include Greek potatoes, rice pilaf and steak fries, and desserts run to tiramisu, turtle pie and rice pudding. A children's menu covers kids 12 and under.
The building has been enlarged over the years, and the old lounge, where bands once played every night, is now banquet space. The banquet rooms hold up to 150 people, and the restaurant books private luncheons and dinners by phone, with separate banquet menus for appetizers, lunch and dinner. Dinner reservations are also taken by phone.
Nettle Creek Lavender Farm, west of Morris, is about 30 minutes southwest on I-80. Its you-pick is by appointment, so set up a daytime farm visit first and then head back east for an early steak dinner, since Al's opens at 4 pm.
