About Bishop Spring Lavender Farm

Bishop Spring Lavender Farm is Hallock family land in Greene County, set between the Illinois River bluffs near Hillview. Rex Hallock pieced the farm together from several small farms that had failed in hard times, dug the field drainage by hand and built the house and outbuildings. His son Alan grew corn and soybeans here for about 30 years before retiring into lavender, and the family now counts four generations on the place, including the years it came through the 1993 flood. The rows keep growing; hundreds of new plants went in recently.

The farm runs on you-pick. In 2026 the fields were open Fridays and Saturdays from 9 AM to 5 PM and Sundays from 1 to 5 PM, with the last regular day on Labor Day, September 7; after that, picking was by appointment while lavender lasted. Entry is free. You pay $15 for a basket, which holds about four bundles, and the farm supplies the cutting tools. There is a portable restroom. Pets are not allowed, and anyone with a bee allergy should come prepared, since wild pollinators work the blooms.

The farm's own goods include a farm-crafted lavender soap collection, culinary lavender, sachets, lip balm, essential oil, lavender mist and a hair serum, sold through their website. After the picking season the family takes its hand-harvested lavender to market: in October 2026 they were at the Old Capitol Farmers Market in downtown Springfield on Wednesday and Saturday mornings and at the Jacksonville Farmers Market every other Saturday.

Greene Fields Farm in Greenfield, about 25 minutes east, makes a second Greene County farm stop on the same day.
