About Callahan's Mountain Lodge
Callahan's began on March 23, 1947, when Don Callahan, back from World War II, opened a small wood and stone café cut into the hillside, and his wife Nilde wrote an Italian-influenced menu. The state removed the original motor lodge in 1963 to widen Interstate 5, and the family reopened in 1965 at today's site in the Siskiyou Mountains, close to the Pacific Crest Trail and Mount Ashland. After a fire in 2006 the lodge was rebuilt and reopened in 2008, and Mark and Lisa Cleaner, the third owners since 1947, bought it in 2020.
The restaurant is open year-round. Breakfast runs 8 to 10:30 am daily, with dishes such as a Dutch baby and a PCT skillet; an all-day menu starts at noon; and evening plates include duck ravioli, fish puttanesca and filet mignon, with prime rib and coq au vin on weekends. Wally's Bar opens at 2 pm, and live music plays Friday through Sunday from 5 to 8 pm. Reservations are given priority, so call ahead for dinner.
Families and dogs are both welcome here. There is a kids' menu, and a small menu for dogs, and the lodge is pet friendly. Guest rooms range from modest to penthouse, some with Jacuzzi tubs, and the lodge hosts weddings of up to 250 guests. Mount Ashland, Emigrant Lake County Park and several wineries are within about 15 minutes, and on November 26, 2026, the lodge serves a Thanksgiving buffet.
