About Famille Migneron de Charlevoix
Maurice Dufour and Francine Bouchard started this Charlevoix business in 1994 as one of Quebec's early small-scale cheese dairies, and the second generation of the family now runs it. Their flagship cheese, the Migneron de Charlevoix, has been named Grand Champion across all categories at a Canadian cheese competition. Dairy sheep arrived in 2004, the first vines went in in 2009, and a distillery followed in 2016.
Today the farm grows Oscéola Muscat, Sainte-Croix, Radisson, Marquette and Somerset grapes for white, rosé and sparkling wines certified organic by Ecocert Canada. The distillery turns whey from the cheese making and grape marc from the vines into eaux-de-vie; the whey spirit launched in 2020.
A visit centers on the shop, which carries cheeses and some products sold only on site, along with the wines and spirits. A tasting is offered on the terrace every day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and there is a picnic area where you can eat what you buy while looking out over the countryside. The Sentier des Florent hiking trail crosses the family's mountain if you want to stretch your legs first. The family describes the site as dog-friendly.
Azulée, the organic culinary lavender farm overlooking Baie-Saint-Paul, is only a few minutes away, so the two make an easy half day: lavender in the morning, then cheese and a picnic lunch here.
