About Green River Oaks Camping Resort
Green River Oaks has been a campground in Amboy since 1972. Dennis and Nanette Gillan, longtime guests of the previous owners, bought it in the fall of 2013 and have updated the buildings and grounds since; Nanette and the family carry on after Dennis died in 2023. The 130-acre property sits along the Green River in Lee County and includes Lake St. George, a private lake stocked with catfish, bass and bluegill.
The resort rents tent and RV sites by the night, week or season, plus cabins, park models and travel trailers for people who would rather not bring their own. In 2026 seasonal campers arrived April 17, the public season ran May 1 to October 12, and the last public weekend was the Halloween weekend. The two heated pools are open Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Most weekends have a theme, from Cinco de Mayo and Quack Attack to a Water Weekend and Boot Scootin' into Fall, and an activities director runs free kids' crafts every weekend. Between events there are playgrounds, gaga ball pits, tennis, pickleball, basketball and volleyball courts, a baseball diamond, horseshoes, shuffleboard and free mini-golf. On the river you can tube, kayak or raft, and small round boats rent for a fee. Fishing in Lake St. George is catch and release with no license needed; the Green River requires an Illinois license for anyone over 16. The general store has a snack bar, groceries, firewood and propane.
All Good Things, by Foster & Family, a lavender grower in the Amboy area, is only a few minutes away, so the two fit together on a summer camping weekend; check the farm's social pages for open days first.
