About Maude Wines Tasting Room
Maude is a family wine company in Wānaka with an in-town tasting room on Golf Course Road, looking over the golf course to Lake Wānaka. The story starts in 1994, when Dawn and Terry Wilson planted the Mt Maude vineyard on steep, north-facing slopes in the Maungawera Valley, among the first ten vineyards in Central Otago. Their daughter Sarah-Kate and her husband, winemaker Dan Dineen, created the Maude label in 2006 and make the wines in their own winery.
The range runs from Estate pinot gris and pinot noir to single-vineyard pinot noirs (Kids Block, East Meets West, Poison Creek and Mohawk Hill) and the Reserve chardonnay and pinot noir, which come only from the Mt Maude vineyard.
The tasting room is open Thursday to Sunday, 12pm to 5pm. Hosted tastings at the Tasting Bench start on the hour, last about 45 minutes and cost $20 per person, waived with any two-bottle purchase. The room is small, so booking by phone or email is strongly recommended, though walk-ins are welcome when there is space. On the terrace every Maude wine is poured by the glass or bottle, with changing bites and a cheeseboard that is always on the menu.
Wānaka Lavender Farm is about 10 minutes' drive away, so a morning walk among the lavender in summer and an afternoon tasting with a cheeseboard on the terrace fit neatly together.
