About Wānaka Lavender Farm
Wānaka Lavender Farm sits on 30 acres a few kilometers outside Wānaka, about a 4 to 5 minute drive from the town center. What began as bare land with a few old trees was planted out by two brothers, inspired by their parents, with thousands of lavenders plus native plants, perennials, herbs, trees and food crops. The farm opened its doors on November 1, 2014, and has grown into a family business with a tearoom, honey tasting, production rooms and a lavender shop.
The lavender flowers in the Southern Hemisphere summer, so December, January and February are the months to see full purple rows. The farm stays open year-round, though, and the display gardens change with each season. There is no pick-your-own: every stem harvested goes into the farm's oils and handmade products. In winter, visitors can help feed the alpacas and sheep.
Families get plenty to do: giant games, time with the farm animals, honey tasting, flower identification and a lavender scavenger hunt with a prize. The tearoom serves herbal tea, lavender ice cream and lavender and honey treats made by local Wānaka bakers and confectioners with lavender grown on the farm. A seasonal picnic for two can be booked ahead, but outside picnics are not allowed. The shop sells farm-made soaps, creams, oils and culinary lavender, with testers to try.
Wānaka's lakefront cafés are only a few minutes away, so the farm fits easily into a morning or afternoon in town.
