Merritt's started in 1979 when Larry and Bobbie Merritt bought a 450-square-foot shop that sold only birthday and wedding cakes. The Midtown store on East 15th Street, which opened on December 1, 1993 in a remodeled building across the street from that first shop, is the one the family calls the original. Bobbie's cake decorating built much of the business, and cinnamon rolls, brownies, cookies and donuts were added in the early years.
Inside are long showcases of traditional bakery favorites, a cake book to page through for design ideas, and a bridal showroom for planning a wedding cake. The menu runs from breakfast items and donuts to breads, grill items, small treats and desserts, and there is seating if you want to stay.
Hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. You can order regular items on their website for pickup, or call about custom cakes. A second Tulsa store on South Delaware Avenue near Riverside and a Broken Arrow store keep the same hours, and you can even order at one store and pick up at another.
From Midtown, Honey Creek Farm near Mounds is about 40 minutes south. The lavender farm runs private tours by appointment, so a box of pastries from here makes an easy start to a farm afternoon.
