About Naegelin's Bakery

Naegelin's Bakery on South Seguin Avenue calls itself the oldest bakery in Texas. Its story starts with Edouard Naegelin Sr., who arrived in New Braunfels in 1868 at age 24 and bought the South Seguin Avenue property in 1874. His children and grandchildren ran the shop for decades, remodeling it in 1935, and the Granzin family took it over in the early 1980s.

The cases lean on the town's German roots: apple, cherry and peach strudel by the slice or whole, German rye and pumpernickel loaves, lebkuchen, springerle and pfeffernuesse cookies, and German pretzels. There are also fruit and cheese kolaches, bratwurst and jalapeno sausage kolaches, donuts, bear claws, fried pies and a long list of pies from pecan to buttermilk chess. King cakes are on the menu too.

It opens early, at 6:30 a.m. every day but Sunday, so it makes an easy breakfast stop before a day on the river or in Gruene. Custom and wedding cakes are ordered by phone, and the bakery delivers in New Braunfels and the San Antonio area. Shirts, mugs and local honey from the shelf make small gifts.

From downtown New Braunfels, Rough Creek Lavender near Wimberley is about 35 minutes northwest. Pick up strudel for the road, and check the ranch's website for public open days before heading out.
