About Nevada City Winery
Nevada City Winery calls itself the oldest operating winery in the Sierra Foothills, and it sits right in the historic downtown of Nevada City, a town founded during the 1850s Gold Rush. The wine is made directly below the tasting room. The list runs to about 26 low-intervention wines, from Barbera and a Sangiovese rosé to a spiced pear Riesling, and the building also holds an art gallery and gift shop.
The tasting room is open every day: Monday through Wednesday 2 to 6 p.m., Thursday 2 to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday noon to 7 p.m., and Sunday noon to 6 p.m. Bar service needs no reservation. For a slower visit, the Guided Tasting is a seated hour with a host and five current releases ($30, parties of four to eight, booked by email or phone), and the Tour & Tasting is a 90-minute walk through the winery with the winemaker, including history and barrel samples ($45, parties of four to ten, prepaid).
Light bites are served during your visit, including a charcuterie board, cheese wedge with crackers and snack bowls, and a neighboring chocolate shop will deliver to your table. Children and dogs are welcome in the tasting room, which makes this an easy downtown stop for a mixed group. The winery also hosts events and rents its space for private gatherings; it is closed for private events on Tuesday, October 27 and Saturday, November 14, 2026.
Tres Jolie Lavender Farm, south of Grass Valley, is about 25 minutes away on Highway 49. In June and July, when it opens for U-pick by appointment, a morning cutting lavender and an afternoon in downtown Nevada City make a full day.
