About Red Oak Brewery
Red Oak Brewery has been making beer since 1990 and brews nothing but lager. Its home in Whitsett, between Greensboro and Burlington, is the Red Oak Lager Haus & Biergarten, a Bavarian-style hall and landscaped garden with long communal tables. The brewery says every beer follows the German purity law, uses four ingredients, and is left unfiltered, unpasteurized and naturally carbonated, with aging times of seven to twelve weeks or more.
The year-round taps are the Bavarian Amber, the Hummin' Bird golden helles and a Noble Pilsner made with Barke barley and Tettnang and Hallertau hops. Seasonal releases rotate through an Oktoberfest Märzen in the fall and several bocks, including the 1516 Heller Bock, the Black Oak Doppelbock and the Big Oak Vienna Bock. On Fridays the brewery runs a guided tour that follows the brewing process from start to finish and ends with samples in the 1516 Tap Room.
Food comes from rotating food trucks and the on-site Wursthaus; outside food and drinks are not allowed. The grounds also hold the Griffith Fine Art Museum and the Hummin' Bird Hall gallery, and the brewery posts festivals, live music and food truck dates on its events calendar. This is a strictly 21-and-over property for every guest, including babies, so it is a stop for an adult outing rather than a family day. Quiet, leashed dogs are welcome inside and out.
Muddy Creek Lavender in High Point is about 30 to 35 minutes southwest by I-40 and I-85. That farm sells mainly at markets and by farm pickup, so check its website for dates before planning a combined day; the Lager Haus opens at noon on weekends, which leaves the morning free.
