About Rockgarden Terrace

Rockgarden Terrace is a family resort on the west side of Lake Mindemoya, in the middle of Manitoulin Island. The Argmann family has been building it up since 1975. It sits on white limestone cliffs of the Amabel formation, about 80 feet above the water, and its dining room looks out over the lake.

The kitchen cooks European dishes with a strong German and Austrian streak: Wiener schnitzel, Hungarian goulash, Kasseler Rippchen with sauerkraut, Swabian sauerbraten with red cabbage and homemade spaetzle, along with Lake Huron whitefish and lake trout. Desserts include Austrian apple strudel and Prinzregenten torte. Dinner is a set three-course menu at $65 to $69 per person, served at a single seating between 6 and 6:30 p.m., and breakfast runs from 8 to 10 a.m. Most resort stays include both meals, and diners who are not staying at the resort must reserve ahead.

The licensed Garden Terrace, shaded by old maples and overlooking the lake, and Ossie's Lounge are the places to linger after dinner. The resort also owns Mindemoya Cave, a glacier-carved cave about 80 feet deep reached by a 10-minute walk on a rocky, root-covered trail. The cave is closed for the 2026 season and is set to reopen in mid-June 2027; when open, tickets are $7.50 for adults and $6 for children 2 to 12, cash or debit, and dogs are not allowed on the trail.

Manitoulin Farmstead, the lavender farm in Mindemoya, is about 15 minutes east around the lake. In summer, visit the lavender in the afternoon and come back for the 6 p.m. dinner seating.
